what I buy at the dollar store

One part of life that I don't talk much about on this blog is finances.  However, I realize that everyone is looking for ways to save a bit, so I plan to start sharing more on how we save a buck here and there on certain items, and how to live a more frugal life.

One of the ways we save money is by shopping for particular things at the dollar store.  I prefer Dollar Tree, and these are some of the specific items I always pick up for a buck.

Eyeliner: Hands down, the best pencil eyeliner I have ever had is from Dollar Tree.  It is soft, but not too soft, and easy to apply.  I've been using this same eyeliner for over 3 years now and I can't say enough good things about it.  It comes in either a 2-pack or a pack with eye shadow.

Nail Polish: Unless I go to the salon and pay about $30 for a gel manicure (which I'll do for special occasions about once a year), I've never had a manicure, at home or otherwise, last more than 4-5 days. That being said, I don't like to spend a lot on nail polish, when I've personally never seen a huge difference between a $1 bottle and a $10 bottle.  I started picking up nail polish from Dollar Tree, and so far it's been great! Goes on well, and holds up just as well as any other polish I have!

Organizational Items: Dollar stores have a ton of options for little bins and drawer organizers, and they often come in a pack of 2 or 3 for just a dollar.  We like to live simply, and one of the ways to achieve this is by keeping our home organized.  We always know where things are, and cleaning up is a breeze.  Take my bathroom drawer for instance; these bins cost me a total of $2, and now everything has its own place.  Plus, it brings a smile to my face when I open this drawer.

Painting Supplies: A few painting supplies are a bit on the expensive side at the big box stores, so I always purchase small foam rollers that are 2/$1.  These are $2.48/each at other stores.  And sometimes I purchase paint brushes.  I'm known to forget about brushes while I'm painting, letting them dry out and ruining a brush that cost $4-5 dollars.  These brushes are okay quality, and do the job most of the time.

Greeting Cards...Have you seen how much greeting cards are at Target, Walmart, the grocery store etc?! After you purchase a gift, the card runs you another $4-$6! I'm not trying to cheap out on my gifts or anything, but cards are really more about the thought than anything else.  Pick out a cute card for $1, write a sweet note, and you've accomplished the same thing, and saved quite a few dollars along the way.  Think about it, if you give one card per month, you save $36-$60/year!

Those are my go-to items at the dollar store and I hope that you found this helpful! What items do you buy at the dollar store?  Anything that you definitely recommend someone not buy at the dollar store?

  1. I love the dollar store for organizing items and greeting cards! I don't wear a lot of make-up or nail polish, but now that I know it's good stuff at the dollar store, maybe I'll be more inclined to since it won't matter as much if it expires before I use it all up. Thanks for sharing your purchases!

  4. Always buy cards there. They just get thrown away usually and they are crazy expensive other places!

  5. Love the dollar tree!!! I have bought makeup items that I love and to me they wear just as long as my expensive brands. If I break a palette of eye shadow no big deal. If I break a palette of MAC shadows its heartbreaking. Thanks for the post.

  7. I love your tip about the makeup. I haven't tried the eye liner but I will. I buy their nail polish and have liked that. I also buy crafty stuff there to make holiday decor, and that has worked out great!! I do think you have to be careful about what you buy. Would love to see your list of "what not to buy"!! Thanks.

  8. The Dollar Store is my favorite place for organizational items! The things they sell at places like Michael's and Target are nice because they show you how it should work and how pretty it will look, etc. But the Dollar Store stuff forces you to get really creative.

I love their eyeliner, as well! Elf liner is one of my favorites. Anywhere else, the same quality would cost about $8 a stick. Nope!

Thanks for sharing! Found you on Project Parade. :)

  10. There are some really phenomenal ideas here! I always forget about the organizing supplies and I could really use a bunch right now. I may just be swinging by tomorrow after work.

  14. I love the Dollar Tree. I have those same storage containers in several places in our home. And because I do send so many cards, I always get them there. Although, I have learned to get the holiday ones when they first come out, or they are GONE!

  15. I have to stay out of the dollar stores or I end up with so much I don't need! As you age, you just don't need as much as when you're young, especially with children.

  16. I don't buy makeup at the dollar store because I only use all-natural for skin/body/cleaning products. (I just read the other day that in less than 30 SECONDS from the time you put a chemical on your body it can be found in every organ! :P )

We do get party supplies there, and cards. (Hallmark used to have a 99-cent card section, too, btw.) Hair things. School/office/craft supplies. Gift bags. Organizing doohickies. Pregnancy tests.

Our Dollar Tree also sells day-old bread (which is a REALLY good deal when they have our preferred 100% whole wheat bread - that saves almost $3/loaf!) and plain t-shirts that are great for crafting/decorating/etc.

  17. I just picked up 2 bday cards at the dollar store last wee, TWO for a dollar! haha score! And no one was the wiser, and a few people who signed them (for office bdays) commented on how nice they were. I agree with you 100%- maybe the $6 card is nice for a wedding or super special occasion, but no one will notice your $0.50 card!

  18. I need to visit the local dollar store and stock up on organizational supplies. That does sound like the best option, and I do need to declutter. Great post :)

  19. Sometimes they have cute potholders. Watch out for the ones that have polyester material for the side opposite the 'pretty side.' I try to keep the pretty side clean. The plain side will catch fire if dropped on a burner if it isn't all cotton.
