birth announcement frame

When our niece was born, over 10 months ago, we received the cutest birth announcement in the mail.
How precious is that?  We got this when we were still staying at my parent's place, and I have been wanting to do something with it.  Originally, I was planning to get a very detailed white frame, but everytime I put the two together, it was just too much.

Then, one day when I was at the ReStore (my favorite place), I picked up this picture frame for $1.
It sat in our garage for awhile until one day a few months ago when I was bored and decided to spray paint the frame blue.  I used the same spray paint on this frame that I used on Kiva's diy bow holder. I gave the frame a quick coat, let it dry, and then scuffed it up a bit with some sand paper.
Then, I grabbed some scrap linen/burlap fabric leftover from the anniversary pillows I made last year, and attached them to the back piece of the frame using scotch tape (I used tape mostly because I didn't know if I would like it and didn't want to mess with glue).
Then, I added the birth announcement, and it looks super cute.  Now this lives on my desk.
And, the great thing about the placement of these frames, is that they block all the ugly cords on my desk.
And yes, that is a giant Central Perk mug on my desk! My mom found and bought it for me years ago.  It's way too big to drink from, so I think i'm going to plant a succulent in it.

a phone full of memories

Today I was trying to find a way to clean up my phone a bit, I keep getting the message "low disc space", and found that I currently have over 500 pictures on my phone.  Looking through them, probably over 300 of them are my dogs (yikes!).  Here are some of my favorites.
Matthew and his parents - we were all at Red's Porch in Austin

Sunset looking at the Austin skyline.  This was my view on my daily jog at town lake.
The day we bought his wedding ring.
Giant $25 burger our friend Jordan got at Red's porch.  It has two 1/2lb hamburger patties, jalapeno poppers, bacon, tomato, lettuce, onion straws, fried pickles, etc.  And of course, Jordan ate almost the entire thing!
Kristin, Kat and Me at a Rockies game last fall
Easter Dinner 2012
Christmas stocking I knitted for Kiva! I had never knit a stocking, or even in the round before this project that I tackled three weeks before Christmas.  It was a bit stressful to say the least.
On our way to closing on our house!!
My brother with the pups on the day we got Roxy

My Aunt and Uncle's RSVP to our wedding...they had just told us that they are expecting and this card made my day!
All of the honey sticks for our wedding favors...more on that later.
Dress shopping with Mom for our wedding...she is stunning!  And it was a super fun day, too!
Rox was being a little too crazy when we needed to leave the house, so we found this crate on Craigslist for $20...she's not a huge fan
A plant I fell in love with at Home Depot...not sure where to put it yet, so we didn't buy it.
Hershey's Dunkers from Pizza Hut...amazing!
My new glasses, went to walmart and got these frames for $9!!
Flowers on the patio set
Showing Matthew's grandparents videos of our niece Kiva on the big screen!
Ceremony decor
My last nametag with my maiden name at church.
75 roses from Sam's Club for our wedding bouquets
Aden, Kiva and Roxy. Roxy and Kiva loved each other :)
Framed Scrabble board my parents made for us for our wedding.  Everyone on my Dad's side has one and we will be able to add our kid's names to them when we get there.
Raspberries are on their way in our yard!
New wreath for 4th of July.  Just need to get some ribbon to hang, and I'll be done!
Love going through old pictures and reminiscing...thinking about going through my phone from a few years ago to see what I have on there.

open concept

Looking around the blogging and pinterest world, I have noticed one trend that I really want to try: open shelving in the kitchen.  And, we got some beautiful crisp white dishes for our wedding, and I am so excited to display them.

As much as I love this look, and the convenience of having the dishes you use most out in the open, I really didn't want to take down cabinets, or buy and put up new shelves.  So, I found inspiration to achieve this look in another way.

So, after asking my husband if he would mind if I tried this in our kitchen, I removed the cabinet doors on one of our cabinets.  So far, I am loving it (Matthew not so much), but we'll see if we keep it like this or not.
Don't mind the silly support bar in the middle there...we are still working on a solution for that if we decide to keep the shelves like this.

What do you think?  I am loving this so far, and am debating putting some type of fabric or wallpaper backing in these cabinets to add a pop of color or pattern.  I also want to add some curtains to go with another project I'm working on to bring color into this space.

Update: Check out what it looks like now! We took down this cabinet, and put up floating shelves.  I also added some scrapbook paper art to finish these off.

the honeymooners

And no, I'm not talking about these folks...
I'm talking about these folks...
We had the most amazing honeymoon in Punta Cana, Dominican Republic last week.  It was so nice to sneak away after all the wedding planning and festivities and spend time together just the two of us.  We stayed at the all-inclusive Majestic Elegance Punta Cana, and it was an absolutely amazing resort.

Are you ready for picture overload?  I took almost 300 pictures, but I promise I won't put that many up here. First up, our room:
By now you know that I'm a little bit OCD, and I got up early the first morning we were there to unpack and get organized for the week. And, after this, I opened up the curtains to our balcony and found this:
Can you believe it? It doesn't even look real! And this was our life for a whole week; it was so amazing.

A typical day in the Dominican life for us started out with leaving our room in the morning and walking to breakfast.
Courtyard outside of our room.
Our favorite restaurant - Sea and See
Typical Breakfast for me each morning - so good!
After breakfast, we would typically head out to the beach since it was right at the restaurant.
One awesome thing about our room is that the balcony looked over the pool bar, and they always had all kinds of entertaining things going on down there.  For instance, everyday they did water aerobics, and the staff that would lead were hilarious.  Check out this guy - "Johnny Bravo" is what they called him, and he always wore this construction hat.
In the afternoon, we would head down to the pool and get some sun...too much sun in my case!
By far, out of all of our meals, Dinner was the best all week long!
Dessert at the Steak House
Sushi and Dinner at the Japanese Restaurant
Drinks before our Romantic dinner on the beach
Our last dinner in the DR - Lobster at the Sea and See
And, if you haven't seen enough pictures yet, here are a few other good ones!
Our room was on the third floor, so I took quite a few of these.
We could see both the pool and ocean from our room
There was a cute little crab in the bathroom by the beach!
My favorite Elevator pic!
That's my husband!!!
Our trip was so amazing, and it was so nice to relax just the two of us after all the craziness of planning a wedding, buying a house, etc.  Now we can enjoy our lives at home as husband and wife and so far it has been absolutely wonderful!
